BASIC DRILLING TECHNOLOGY
Course overview
This course provides delegates with basic knowledge of drilling operation, drilling equipment and how to plan a successful well. Drilling terminology, abbreviations and common problems such as stuck pipe, lost circulation and how to avoid them are discussed. Basic knowledge of drilling fluid, drilled solids management, drill bits, rig math, drill string design, directional drilling, cementing, casing and hydraulic optimisation are included. Pressure and pressure effects, drilling performance and rock failure under pressure are extensively discussed. Application of software in the planning, design and construction of a well is also highlighted.
Course Outcome
By the end of this course, delegates will gain skills and knowledge to:
  • Overall drilling process: understanding the terminologies
  • Rig math
  • Drilling fluids
  • Cementing operation and casing design
  • Rig equipment and types
  • Pore pressure and kick detection
  • Well Control
  • Hole problems: stuck pipe, lost returns
  • Measurement while drilling (MWD)
  • Directional drilling operations and tools
Who should attend?
